Polaris/Guides/UCAS personal statement

The UCAS personal statement is now three questions.

From 2026 entry, students applying to UK undergraduate courses answer three set questions instead of writing one free essay. Here is how the questions work, and how to plan the answers with a student.

The three questions

Question 1Why do you want to study this course or subject?
Question 2How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject?
Question 3What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

The limits

Each answer needs at least 350 characters. All three together can use up to 4,000 characters, counted with spaces and line breaks, the same total as the old statement. How the 4,000 are shared between the questions is up to the student.

One statement goes to all five choices, so it should be about the subject, not about one university.

Planning the answers

  • Question 1 carries the most weight for most courses: what draws the student to the subject, in specific terms.
  • Question 2 connects their A Levels, IB or FSc subjects, projects and reading to the course, rather than listing grades the university can already see.
  • Question 3 is for work, volunteering, competitions and responsibilities at home, with what each one taught them about the subject.
  • Avoid saying the same thing twice across the three answers; the questions are read together.

The reference

The school's reference is structured too, in three parts: a general statement about the school, any circumstances affecting the student's studies, and what the referee wants the university to know about the student. For a school counselling office, that means planning references alongside the statements, not after them.

Polaris holds all three answers

Each UCAS question is its own piece of writing, with versions, comments and a character count measured the way UCAS counts it. Rehnuma points out repetition between the answers and asks questions; it never writes them. References are tracked beside the statement.

Questions

Quick answers.

How long is the UCAS personal statement from 2026 entry?

Up to 4,000 characters in total, including spaces, across three questions. Each answer needs at least 350 characters.

What are the three UCAS personal statement questions?

Why do you want to study this course or subject? How have your qualifications and studies helped you to prepare for this course or subject? What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful?

Does each university get a different statement?

No. One statement goes to all of the student's choices, so it should be about the subject rather than one university.
